Meet Claire

My name is Dr Claire Madigan, and I work in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences. My research focuses on helping people to better manage their weight to improve their health.
Aiding weight management for brighter futures
My years of experience in public health have led me to conduct research about implementable public health interventions for weight management and maintenance of behaviours. My overall aim is to help people live longer, healthier lives.
I am currently leading two projects funded by the National Institute of Health and Care Research. The first project called SHARE is exploring what support people need to keep the weight off they have lost after attending a weight management programme.
The second project called PRE:WEL involves a programme of work that is exploring whether weight loss before surgery reduces adverse events. This is really important as sometimes surgery is denied if your BMI is too high.
Linked to the PRE:WEL project, I am also involved in developing prehabilitation interventions to help people get fit for surgery.
I am also co-theme lead of Brief interventions and making every contact counts within the Centre for Lifestyle, Medicine and Behaviour and supervise four wonderful PhD students.
