Lisa Climie-Somers

  • Doctoral Researcher

PGR supervision: Dr Barbara Cooke and Dr Claire O'Callaghan with Independent Reviewer Dr Nick Freeman

Lisa is interested in the Victorian era and specifically in the factors which affect life choices for women, sexual subordination within a patriarchal system, and diaspora movements connected to religious beliefs. A specific focus is how the experiences of this group influenced popular Victorian fiction. She also has an interest in TE Lawrence due to an ancestral connection to his long-term friend Vyvyan Richards. Lisa researched and wrote extensively about this relationship while studying her MA at UEA. Lisa entered higher education late as a mature student, after a varied career as an actor, singer, artist management, and as a co-founder and manager of an addiction rehabilitation treatment centre. She attained a master’s degree with merit in Biography and Creative Non-Fiction at the University of East Anglia (UEA).

Lisa is a doctoral researcher in the final year of a practice-based PhD in English. Her thesis is on UK women who joined the early Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) and then travelled in large numbers to the American west as pioneers. Her direct ancestors were part of this movement. In her work, Lisa uses a blend of Memoir, Creative Non-Fiction and Historical Fiction.
